Dry needling involves the insertion of fine acupuncture needles into taught tight bands of muscles & tendons to resolve pain fast. It involves puncturing the skin with thin needles with the aim to provide relief from aches, pain & muscle disorder.

Practitioners of dry needling are expertly trained in anatomy and attempt to release tension from trigger points or more commonly known to the public as knots with advanced dry needling skills.

The History of Dry Needling

Dry needling has a proven track record of >3000 years.

It was developed and trialled over a number of years initially by injecting cortisone and lidocine deep into the muscle tissues to treat painful muscle spots, this relieved pain.

This was then trialled against a saline solution (a mix of salt and water) and the same outcome was achieved - Pain was relieved.

This lead to then trialling the saline solution against a dry injection with NO solution and the same outcome was achieve - Pain was relieved.

The diameter of a needle used to inject solution is far more invasive then a small fine acupuncture needle which were readily available so the next step was to trial against using an acupuncture needle inserted into the muscle trigger point and you guessed it right; the same outcome was achieve - PAIN WAS RELIEVED  👍

The Theory of Dry Needling

The Dysfunctional end plate and energy crisis is probably the most accepted theory related to the development of Trigger points (knots).

Overstretching, over shortening or overloading a muscle may cause a microtrauma within the tissue, a mircrotrauma (repetitive movements, a high velocity movement, stress positions / posture) results in rupturing of the muscle cell membranes Damage to the cell membrane causes the release of Ca2+ (calcium ions), around the injury site which means constant Ca2+ activity causing constant myofilament (proteins in muscle) activity and sustained contraction even in the absence of voluntary action potentials (cell to cell communication). This means that even though there is no need for the muscle to be active, it still is active therefore fatigues quicker and thus produces more pain or weakness. If left untreated, this process repeats and further weakens and damage to the muscle tissues & tendons occur resulting in more pain and further postural changes.
