There are lots of different types of massages available now; each with their own unique techniques and style of application. I have outlined the different types of massages available at our Chelmsford clinic and how they could benefit you!

Sports Massage

Sports massage therapy is a term originally used to describe a massage to treat a sports person or injury. Sports massage is MUCH MORE than just treating sports persons, everyone can benefit for a sports massage!

A Sports massage can be used prior to a sporting event, during an even or after an event. It can also be used in a clinic environment to treat a number of ailments, reduce pain and improve functional movements of the body. A sports massage before an event is primarily of a lighter touch to warm the muscles, increase blood flow and to ultimately prepare for the event ahead. A sports massage during an event is usually performed to aid the metabolic waste build up when putting your body through its paces – this helps to improve mobility of the soft tissues and reduce the rate in which muscles fatigue and increase performance. A sports massage after an event is basically to undo the stress and build up of tension in the tissues to help cool down, let the muscles relax and flush out toxins from the build-up of waste products.

Deep Tissue Massage

A deep tissue massage is like a sports massage. Using targeted pressure techniques and massage to get deep into the knots and tension which builds up in our soft tissues which cause the tight, stiff achy feeling of muscles and joints therefore a deep tissue massage will help to relieve tension and reduce pain in the body. The pressure used in a deep tissue massage is really dependant client to client so it is really a case of what is required to make a change and what the client can tolerate to help release muscle tension and promote blood flow.

A deep tissue massage is ideal for patients who want to experience relief from the daily stresses of life on the body especially in this day and age where we live in a world of technology looking down at computers, smart phones and tablets causing head and neck pain especially from sitting behind a computer all day at a desk which unfortunately seems to be the way of the world!

Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu massage literally means finger pressure and is one of the oldest massage techniques which originated from Japan. This style of massage therapy uses pressures with hands, elbows and feet to massage the body.
The belief of having a shiatsu massage is maintaining the free flow of energy in the body. Having a sports massage or deep tissue massage will have equal benefits and help with pain in the body due to imbalances of tension throughout however in a shiatsu massage, it is believed that working on the positive and negative energy can help unblock any barriers in the was of our ‘energy flow’

Shiatsu massage along with other massage techniques help release ‘blocked’ energy flow and aids to ‘rebalance’ the energy flowing in the body which in turn helps the function of all organs and helps to prevent disease.

Thai Massage

Thai massage is thought to have been introduced and developed by Buddhist monks in Thailand over 2000 years ago! A Thai massage includes passive stretching of the soft tissue from head to toe along with gentle pressure points along the body’s ‘energy lines. To help relieve muscle tension, increase joint movement and balance the body’s energy. Thai massage also goes by the name of Thai yoga massage.

Swedish Massage

A Swedish massage is a western style of massage therapy which uses various massage techniques. It consists of long, slow gliding massage strokes, gripping and lifting tissues, along with compression and pressure, tapping and more focused pounding of the muscles and tissues using soft hands and open fingers. Like the other massage techniques listed here, a Swedish massage aims to relieve stress and tension in the body.

Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage incorporates stones, normally river stones that are of all shapes and sizes. The stones are cleaned and boiled to a specific temperature before use on the body. Usually, the stones are placed on or around the parts of the body where the painful areas are. If used for relaxation, the stones are placed along the back, down the spine to the buttocks. The hot stone will then slowly heats the skin and deeper structures that relax the muscles and soft tissues below sending messages to the brain via receptors in the tissues.
